How many years will my implants last?
Provided that the patient properly monitors the hygiene of the oral cavity, and also regularly comes to the doctor for examinations and professional cleaning, implants will serve you throughout your life.
-
At what age can implants be placed?
By about 18 years of age, the growth of the jaw bones is completed and dental implantation can already be performed. At this age, the patient is already an adult, the jawbone is fully formed, the bones are dense and all other teeth will not move. As for the maximum limit, it does not exist: we carry out implantation operations for both 70 and 80-year-old patients due to the minimal trauma of treatment – the main thing is to exclude contraindications and take care of your health!
-
What are the contraindications to implant placement?
Contraindications to implantation can be conditionally divided into two types: absolute and relative. With absolute contraindications, implantation is completely excluded, with relative ones – the installation of implants and prostheses is possible, but after additional treatment.
The absolute contraindications include:
• pathology of the cardiovascular and nervous systems;
• epilepsy, as a seizure is possible during surgery;
• tuberculosis, as this disease affects the bone tissue, which leads to the rejection of the implant.
• diseases of the blood and blood-forming organs, in particular, problems with blood clotting;
• the presence of malignant tumors and conditions after radiation and drug therapy;
• diseases of the central nervous system;
• mental and behavioral disorders, as inappropriate behavior of the patient can harm both himself and the clinic staff.
• immunopathological diseases.Relative contraindications include:
• stabilized diabetes mellitus (treatment is carried out under the supervision of an endocrinologist);
• a state of immunodeficiency of the body: HIV infection, AIDS, just a weakened immune system;
• the presence of sexually transmitted diseases;
• taking drugs in the past; smoking;
• inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity;
• periodontitis, periodontal disease, osteomyelitis or osteoporosis of the jaw.In any case, the implantologist carefully examines the situation and decides on the possibility or impossibility of implantation.
-
Can implants fail to take root?
Rejection of the implant is now extremely rare – about 1-4% of cases.
There are 3 main reasons why this happens!
№1. Peri-implantitis is an inflammation of the tissues around.
This complication occurs due to a number of factors – from contraindications not identified in time and untreated carious teeth with periodontal disease to ignoring the doctor’s recommendations in the postoperative period – for example, violation of hygiene rules, smoking.№2. Porous bone structure – individual characteristics.
Healing does not occur, because the bone is porous in structure and simply cannot hold the titanium root. Therefore, it is very important to carry out diagnostics using a computed tomography (CT) scanner before surgery. Thus, the doctor sees all problems and “pitfalls” in advance and can prevent all negative consequences of healing in the future.№3. Violations of the osseointegration process.
The main reasons for the lack of osseointegration are:
– Surgical complications such as, for example, overheating of the bone, compression of the bone, lack of stabilization of the implant, as well as premature loading, violation of asepsis and antisepsis, or incorrectly selected implant diameter. -
Can implants be placed in those who smoke?
As it may sound unfortunate, but smoking very much even affects the engraftment of implants. The most important are the first 2-3 weeks after implant placement. We always strongly recommend that our patients minimize, and ideally do not smoke at all, for 2-3 weeks before and after implantation.
Why is this so important? During smoking, a burn forms on the oral mucosa, which means that its normal blood circulation stops and therefore the wounds heal more slowly. Also, due to smoking, the work of the salivary glands is disrupted and dry mouth appears. But our saliva is so necessary for us to naturally cleanse the oral cavity from various kinds of bacteria. When there is little saliva, the pathogenic flora begins to prevail and the risk of developing infectious diseases increases, which in turn negatively affects the engraftment of the implant.
-
Is it possible to play sports after implantation and when?
In the first days after the operation, we recommend you to refrain from active sports. In the future, you can return to your usual way of life. The situation is slightly different if bone grafting was performed during implantation. Then immediately check with the doctor what you can and what is better not to do during the healing period.
-
How many visits are required for a complete implant placement?
It all depends on the volume and type of treatment. The first visit is a consultation where you can ask all your questions and concerns. Also, on the first visit, you can do a computed tomography (CT) for understanding and planing further actions. During the diagnosis, the doctor will be able to determine what size of implant you need, whether there is a need for a sinus lifting operation and whether it is necessary to augment the bone during implantation.
Based on the CT scan, the doctor will prepare a surgical (navigation) template and the implantation operation will be performed on the next visit. One or two days after the placement of the implant, the wound healing is checked and after ten days the stitches are removed (if any were placed).
-
Can implants affect the performance of a pacemaker?
No! Implants cannot interfere with the performance of your pacemaker under any circumstances! They do not produce an electromagnetic effect, therefore they are absolutely safe and have no contraindications in this case!
-
Why is it necessary to place an implant as soon as possible after a tooth loss?
After removing one or more teeth, it is necessary to restore them as soon as possible! If you postpone treatment, negative changes inevitably occur in the body:
• Adjacent teeth will begin to shift to the side of the missing tooth. As a result, the bite worsens, it will be difficult to chew, there will be problems with brushing your teeth, and headaches may also appear. The appearance of crevices and inclination of the teeth will undoubtedly affect the beauty of your smile.
• Due to the fact that the jawbone does not receive the necessary load in the place of the lost tooth, it begins to atrophy. Subsequently, over time, the shape of the face will change.
-
Will I be without teeth during treatment?
No, you won’t. Already at the stage of diagnosis and planning, temporary crowns are modeled, which are installed immediately after implantation. Thanks to modern digital technologies at our SIY Dental clinic, no patient leaves us without teeth!
-
ill it hurt me during the implantation?
No, it won’t hurt at all. For the implantation procedure, local anesthesia is sufficient, and the duration of the operation is only 30-60 minutes. During the installation of the implant, you will feel vibration and some pressure, but nothing more. Most of the patients during this operation feel the same as during the usual dental treatment!

Stages of implant placement
Conventionally, 4 main stages can be distinguished:
1. Planning.
At this stage, the patient undergoes a basic and additional examination. A 3D image is taken, the doctor examines the oral cavity. If necessary, dental caries treatment and hygienic cleaning are performed. It is also necessary to exclude the presence of viruses in the blood, so the patient additionally takes tests in any laboratory. Using a 3D image, the doctor determines the thickness and density of the bone tissue and, based on this, chooses the method of implantation, the length and diameter of the implant. The presence of granulomas and cysts shell also be excluded.2. Surgical stage.
When using the classical method of implantation, the whole procedure is as follows.A dental implant is placed in the jawbone and acts as a root for a new, future tooth. The surgeon cuts the gum and drills a small hole in the bone tissue where the implant is going to be placed, and a plug is put on the protruding part of the metal rod. If necessary, sutures are applied to the incision site on the gum. The entire operation is performed under local anesthesia, so the patient does not feel any pain at all.
The entire operation takes 30-60 minutes.
Full engraftment of the implant takes place within three to six months.
With the non-classical method, a titanium root, abutment and crown are installed immediately in one visit. This method is used only if the patient comes to the clinic in a timely manner.
But, in any case, the timing and stages of implantation are determined in each case individually.3. Preparation for prosthetics, fixation of the abutment.
The abutment is the connecting element between the implant and the crown of the tooth. The entire fixation procedure takes approximately 10-20 minutes and, as a rule, no anesthesia is necessary. Abutments are available in ceramic (custom) and titanium.Fixed on the dental implant, it provides a secure foundation for the future tooth.
Also at this stage, an impression is made or a scan is performed, which will serve for further modeling of the crown.
4. Prosthetics.
After the installation of the dental implants and abutments, the custom-made final design is fixed on them.– The crown is a single tooth.
– Bridge prosthesis – several teeth.
-
Implantation – advantage
Unlike traditional treatment, when crowns and bridges are installed, relying on adjacent healthy teeth, which must be previously prepared (grinded), dental implants do not provide for trauma to healthy teeth.
In addition, in the case of using traditional solutions, the bone tissue does not receive the necessary stimulation, which leads to its gradual resorption and a decrease in the gum volume.
Dental implants, in turn, stimulate the jawbone and gums, providing an aesthetically pleasing, long-lasting result while helping to support the anatomical structures of the face.
It’s also worth noting that dental implants look, feel and function like a natural teeth.
-
Which implants are better to choose
Answering this question, it should be noted that there are a large number of different brands of dental implants on the market today. The quality of the implants can range from very low to very high.
Factors that can affect quality include implant design, implant-to-abutment connection, surface and shape. In addition, the quality of a dental implant also depends on how and where it is made.
Together, these factors affect the maintenance of the functionality and appearance of the dental implant design over time.
And most importantly, the quality of implant systems must be confirmed by in-depth scientific and clinical research.
It should also be noted that each manufacturer of implant systems has its own pricing policy.

How long does the swelling last after implantation?
Swelling of the gums after tooth implantation is a normal physiological process after surgery, which the surgeon warns about at the consultation stage.
Swelling is the flow of lymphatic fluid to injured tissues.
Any surgical intervention – tooth extraction, sinus lifting, tooth implantation leads to tissue injury, so the patient just needs to wait until the swelling subsides and follow all the recommendations of his doctor.
Normally, edema forms for several days. On the first day after the installation of the implant, the gums swell, on the second day the cheek swells, and on the third day the swelling remains the same size, without an increasing effect.
As practice shows, everything returns to normal by 4-6 days. If severe edema persists for more than 6 days, this may indicate complications after implantation, therefore, it is necessary to see the attending doctor 3-6 days after the operation.

Dental Implant Care
Hygiene and care of dental implants looks like caring for real teeth and involves the usual brushing and flossing. It is also necessary to use balms or mouth rinses.
In addition, to ensure complete care of your new smile, it is necessary to regularly visit the dentist to check the health of your teeth and carry out professional cleaning.
